From the Back Cover
A nostalgic look back at childhood and the simple values that made America greatIn a world of helicopter parents, overscheduled children, hamstrung teachers, and entitled teenagers, one sometimes wonders if imagination, determination, dedication, and good old respect have gone the way of the dinosaur. In Mean Dads for a Better America, comedian and Fox News contributor Tom Shillue tells tales of his own childhood growing up in a large Irish Catholic family in suburban Massachusetts in the 1970s, and uses them to show how simple American values—love of God, Country, and Family—influenced the person he is and kept him grounded. With charming, honest stories about his family and his road to adulthood, Tom Shillue takes a unique approach to addressing many of the issues that confound American parents today—our permissive culture, political correctness, overzealous parenting, and the dominance of technology over good old-fashioned outdoor play. Mean Dads for a Better America illuminates the essential virtues of a simpler time while also reminding us that it’s important to laugh while we work out where we are headed.

This book is so much more than just a book about being a traditional father. The author really takes you on a journey. You’ll be laughing out loud on one page and then turn the page and find yourself feeling moved and inspired. The author’s perspective on parenting is really funny and insightful. If you were a child or teen in the 70's and 80's, you will be flooded with memories sparked by Tom Shillue's stories of his youth. Tales of his pursuit of a career in show biz are extremely entertaining. Tom Shillue is now one of my favorite authors and I can't wait for him to write another book. #LovedIt #Genius
As I read this book, it seemed so familiar to my childhood upbringing. Fond memories. Solid parenting lead to responsible adulthood while letting the young Tom find his own way and discover the world around him. Well done Mr. and Mrs. Shillue.
Open this book. Start reading. Clear the floor so that you don't hurt yourself when you roll on the floor. The author takes you through a journey of the development of the human psyche (and also through society, if you're paying attention) as he (by reverse hypnosis?) teaches you how to be a better dad.Witty. Incisive. But most of all, FUNNY, you need this book to get you through the infancy and adolescence of this nation...I mean, your own kids.Buy for others with reckless abandon!
Full disclosure, I grew up with Tom and he mentions my cousin in his book, (it's not pretty.) That said, being his childhood peer, I wouldn't lie and tell you it was great if it sucked. That's not how people from Norwood are. We tell it like it is. He well captured the feel of growing up in that town, in that era. It was "heartwarming," and if you are a Shillue fan, no matter where you are from you will feel the love as well.I especially liked reading about his father's directive for snow shovelling. My own father was like that.
This book should be mandatory reading for all the teenagers of today. Everyone thought his Dad was the meanest man in the neighborhood and at the end of the book, he told how much he appreciated the way he was raised. I loved this book and would recommend it for all to read.. Funny with a lot of life lesson enclosed. Patriotism, faith, and family values.
So many memories were brought to the surface while reading this book. Like Mr. Shillue, I was raised primarily in the 1970s,which really were not that different a life than had existed for kids over the previous two decades.I am also grateful for the traditional and distinctly American upbringing my parents gave me. Those values are all but extinct these days and it was wonderful to read how those values had benefited others like they did me... and will benefit my children as well.Highly recommended!
Every once in a while I enjoy a light book to relax with. This one did that for me. I felt that I learned about a devout Catholic family and also liked learning about life with a New Jersey city family. It reminded me a little about my childhood. Now I enjoy seeing Tom on TV even more than I did before. He did not try to preach to the reader or make any philosophical statements or compare his life to anyone else. I would guess that his daughters are nice and happy girls
Shillue wrote a very funny book about growing up in the 70's. Structure meant "go outside and play" rather than dance class, t-ball, soccer teams day care--you know, like kids today who seem to have not a minute of being what they want to be and doing what they want, unless it involves electronic devices. Some of the scenes had me laughing out loud and others had me gasping "how did we survive!?" I recommend this to anyone who grew up in that time or around that time and to anyone who can stretch their brains to wonder about their parents' childhood.
