Review

'The wondrous thing is the book truly is an 'all-ages' story that can be enjoyed from 8 to 80 years old.' (Spartantown)Jeremy Whitley, creator and writer of the Princeless comics series, introduced Raven Xingtao, the Pirate Princess, in the third volume Since then, he has published three volumes of Princeless: Raven the Pirate Princess, and in 2017 started publishing issues of Princeless: Raven Year 2. Raven, the daughter and rightful heir of the Pirate King, ended up imprisoned in a tower because her scheming brothers wanted to take over the lucrative piracy trade. She broke out of the tower, and in the begin- ning of the first volume, has stolen her father's old ship with a plan to exact revenge against her brothers. As she seeks a crew, she reunites with Cookie, one of her father's men who left piracy to run a tavern; encounters the half-elf and pickpocket Sunshine; and winds up with an all-female crew, which includes Cookie's teenage daughter-chemistry whiz Jayla. In the second volume, the crew divides into several teams to buy supplies, but things do not go well. Raven's brothers have heard about what she is doing, and they hire men of the town to capture Raven and her crew. Raven's navigator Ximena-her one childhood friend and secret crush-suffers life-threatening inju- ries during a rescue operation. In the third volume, as the crew sails their ship to find an island where a fabled healer lives, Raven tells the unconscious Ximena the story of how the Xingtao family came to be. When the island- ers tell Raven their healer will not deal with pirates, she decides to sneak onto the island to confront the healer, and Sunshine-who wants Raven for herself and sees Ximena as a rival-tells the still-unconscious woman the story of how her human father and desert-elf mother met. Whitley fills his stories with action that doesn't shy away from showing the violence of hand-to-hand combat; his artists (mostly Rosy Higgins) fill the panels with fantastic chase scenes, cinematic fight scenes, lush scenery, and a diverse all-female pirate crew. Raven's world is a mix of mid-eighteenth-century ships and towns with ancient Polynesian islands and steampunk high technology. The women's guild, where Raven finds her crew, includes Dungeons & Dragons-style gamers and a panel of leaders who resemble some prominent women comics creators (I spotted Kelly Sue DeConnick and G. Willow Wilson lookalikes). Raven's crew includes women of various ethnicities, body shapes, and one young deaf woman whose dialog is shown in sign language; and so far, all the present-time romantic entanglements are among the women. Whitley may be a white male, but he takes inspiration from his wife and daughters. Raven's adventures are for anyone who wants action-packed stories with strong, well-drawn characters. Princeless: Raven is one of my favorite things. Not one of my favorite comics with queer characters but really just one of my favorite things. Why? I love action, romance, crusades for justice, and I just always, always, always want to see more representation of diverse characters of all kinds, but especially queer folk, people of color, people with disabilities, and I want to see those people just being awesome, and having action adventures with some romance and crusades for justice. This is all that plus it's funny and visually lovely.

I love this book so much. I love the story, the characters, even the way the panels are laid out in certain scenes had me gasping. Each page is visually pleasing, with colors, spacing, and pacing that makes sense to the story. It's just all so thoughtfully chosen. As for the characters themselves, I adore Raven and her band of female pirates and misfits, each unique in appearance and temperament. I also loved the humor and goofiness, certain panels had me laughing out loud or beaming in delight. I really didn't want to get to the end of it, and wondered why I hadn't already ordered the next one so I wouldn't have to wait to read it.And I am way too emotionally invested in the romantic storyline and who Raven will end up going with... though I know who it will be if I could have my say. I am really hoping for a few more romantic scenes amidst all the swashbuckling in the next few novels, I have enjoyed them so much so far! And hooray for such a varied cast of women, wearing exactly what you would expect them to be wearing if they were sea dogs and scallywags and pirates - comfortable, practical clothing! But my lord, some of them look dashing wearing it, and that is fun too.Love it. Can't wait to read the next one.

I love this entire book series; it covers the lives of a crew of women turned pirates sailing the high seas, taking down hoards of villains that try to get in their way. The group lives their lives fearlessly, shamelessly, fighting for what they want, whether it be adventure, love or just friends by their side and the freedom of the high seas. All of the characters are well developed, even the ones who get little screen-time compared to Raven (the main character and bad-ass pirate captain.) and most importantly they come across as a group of normal people thrown into a new and challenging situation. The crew endures hardships and takes time to even figure out how to work together, much less begin pull off Raven's plan to retrieve her family's treasure and her rightful place as Pirate Queen. it's awkward at first, with everyone trying to adjust to their new companions, and realize that they have a little (or a lot) of growing up to do aboard their new floating home.I don't want to spoil anything, but i will say this; the pirate crew are not infallible. They make plenty of mistakes, and some of them are strictly anti-violence, even when it puts them in dangerous situations. But they learn to trust eachother, and believe in themselves, and grow wonderfully as people. Though there are more then a few bruises and wounds along the way.

I really like pirates, and I'm bi so I'm all about the lady loving... this has both and Raven herself is a fantastically entertaining character. I pretty much have every lesbian pirate thing published & printed in English in my personal library and this is definitely one of the stars. To be critical and actually review it ...I mean there's nothing bad about it. I could say somethings the backgrounds can seem a little bland but the art work and writing is either on par or totally blows mainstream comics out of the water. I'm eagerly awaiting vol 2 (already pre-ordered it). This is totally worth supporting.

I can passionately recommend this series from the first comic alone. The only downside is it's very short so you have to have those other books shipping while you read one. The art style is fluid and the movements of characters is clear to follow. The panels are organized. The characters personalities are varied and there's harmony and disharmony in all the right places, no cliche relationships or unoriginal romances. I love the fact that this is about a crew of lgbtq women. The first book is setting the scene for the series, so it was anticlimatic, but I assume the others will have more action and struggle. I will be ordering the next issues in due time. The condition of the book was great with no tears, waterstains, or any other printing flaws.

I read a copy for free, but was so into it that I knew I needed it for my home. The story only gets better and better, which is why I also ordered the other trades and pre-ordered the next. I'm an adult, but my teenage self would have died 10x over while reading the angsty love triangle.

I devoured this in half an hour as soon as the package was delivered. This book is just the setup for all the adventures that are sure to happen next and I can't wait to see what this amazing group of ladies is going to do!

This series is unlike anything else I've ever read. My ten year old daughter loves these stories so much and wants to be Katie when she grows up. So much fun.
