Review
“The still-unfolding tragedy of South Sudan is too little understood and too little known, even among foreign policy experts. Zach Vertin is a rare exception. He has spent his life not just explaining how the promise of this young nation, for which so many sacrificed, was broken so badly, but helping end the bloodshed for a people who have seen far too much of it.  An important read.†- John Kerry, 68th U.S. Secretary of State, author of EVERY DAY IS EXTRA“An engrossingly written account. A Rope from the Sky is an essential guide to one of the world's most intractable conflicts―a must-read for warriors, diplomats, relief experts, and would-be peace negotiators anywhere in the world.†- Jon Lee Anderson, staff writer, THE NEW YORKER“Ponders the extent of Western responsibility in the making―and breaking―of South Sudan…[and] points to a deeper question: what makes a nation?  Vertin wonders whether, like the American Civil War, South Sudan’s misery will ‘ultimately prove an awful but formative part of its becoming a viable state.†- The Economist“Panoramic and absorbing. A masterful account of the birth and near-death of a nation.  Vertin seams together a staggeringly complicated puzzle, re-creating the savage street battles and high-level diplomacy that has informed South. But much of the book’s texture comes from beautiful portraits of the South Sudanese people. An invaluable contribution.†- The Minneapolis Star Tribune“A political roller coaster from Africa to the White House and back. Zach Vertin guides us through South Sudan’s euphoric independence and its devastating descent into war. A compelling read. †- Barton Gellman, Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist and author“A brilliant, authoritative, and colorful insight into the hope and despair that is the world’s youngest country. Unique in modern history, this untold story of South Sudan’s birth carries lessons not just for Africa but for the rest of the world.†- Jon Snow, Journalist and Anchor, Channel 4 News“Vertin, a former NGO analyst and adviser to the U.S. special envoy to Sudan and South Sudan, brings an insider’s knowledge to this gripping, well-written account of South Sudan.†- Publishers Weekly“A highly readable, well-informed and people-centered account.  Essential reading for anyone seeking to understand why South Sudan has unraveled.†- Dame Rosalind Marsden, DCMG, Former British Ambassador to Sudan and European Union Special Envoy“A remarkably authoritative account of South Sudan’s rise and fall; Zach Vertin matches expert political analysis with a journalist’s knack for storytelling, and the result is an exciting and immersive book that will be read for years come. He was present at the creation, and could not be better suited to tell this story.†- Haile Menkerios, former United Nations Under-Secretary-General and Special Envoy to Sudan and South Sudan“Zach Vertin had a front row seat. With a journalist’s verve he takes us through the cast of characters―and forces―which put this country together and then tragically combined to dismantle it. This is a tale of leaders’ illusions and of a terrible violence consequently unleashed. And it’s a story that has not been properly told till now.†- Lord Mark Malloch-Brown KCMG PC, former United Nations Deputy Secretary-General

In A Rope from the Sky, Vertin provides an extraordinary account of the rise and fall of South Sudan. This story is not a simple one to tell, in that there are a host of individuals, organizations, nation states, and dynamics that have something to say about the country both before and after its independence. Against this backdrop, Vertin's account stands out for its ability to be both comprehensible to the layperson who has no foreknowledge about the country and compelling to the foreign policy aficionado who is looking to learn more about contemporary geopolitics. This is also not an easy story to tell, in that South Sudan's history is pockmarked by tragedy. Vertin addresses the tragic aspects of this history deftly, managing to be clear-eyed about the human toll of conflict while remaining hopeful about the country's long-term prospects.Throughout, Vertin writes with empathy, profundity, incisiveness, and candor, combining a reporter's eye for detail with a scholar's critical thinking. As policymakers and the public writ large grapple with the future of South Sudan, it is fortunate that what is, for the time being, the decisive account of the country has been authored by a writing of Vertin's caliber.Highly recommended.
A beautifully written book detailing South Sudan's heartbreaking collapse into conflict following its independence from Sudan. Vertin skillfully weaves back and forth between powerful vignettes of the South Sudanese people most adversely affected by violence, the elites most responsible for it, and an inside perspective of the efforts to bring the warring factions to the negotiating table. The storytelling will captivate both casual and seasoned observers of Sudan/South Sudan and Vertin's account of negotiations provide unique insight into the peace process as well as lessons for mediators and negotiators operating in other conflict contexts.
This is a must read book if you want to understand contemporary South Sudan. Zach Vertin has a keen eye for the nuance of the politics, social dynamics, and characters that make up the story of South Sudan’s road to independence and its eventual unraveling. His descriptions of back room scenes and detailed sketches of the characters involved makes for a page turning read that leaves you not only deeply knowledgeable about the specific events that transpired, but bestowed with transferable understanding of broader issues that have faced other countries on the continent.
I read this engaging book over the course of a few days and, despite having followed this story in the news over the years, learned far more than I expected. Through his unique perspective, the author takes you into the depths of South Sudan's struggle for independence and success - giving voice to the individuals he met along the way. This is one of those books that gets passed around to family and friends -- highly recommended.
A gripping, thoughtful and highly personal account of a story far too few have told. Vertin takes you inside the intrigue and betrayal of the high politics of South Sudan, and also the heartbreaking consequences for ordinary people. He also gives a clear eyed and nuanced account of the beltway politics in Washington, and role of activist groups, congressional veterans, religious ideologues, and celebrities in shaping a US foreign policy that ultimately failed to reach its objectives. And he does it all with an easy and honest style that carries you along effortlessly. It’s readable and compelling and provides endless grist for thought about the future of the nation state: highly recommended!
I picked up this book without knowing much about South Sudan, or African politics in general, and so was a bit intimidated. But the author ably brought me along, telling a fascinating story with fully-developed characters, life-and-death drama, and Machiavellian politics. Mr. Vertin clearly knows the subject very well, and his insider perspective on the events covered in the book make him a great narrator. It's ultimately a heartbreaking, tragic story, but it provides important lessons for American foreign policy -- namely, be clear-eyed about the need for stable political institutions and loyal partners when nation-building, no matter how righteouss the cause may be. Great read -- highly recommend!
This is a beautifully written book - rigorous and comprehensive, taking the reader through a complex story of modern day nation-building. It's full of nuanced analysis and first hand experience, capturing the euphoria of independence no less than the crushing and devastating impact of civil war. I appreciated the many voices of South Sudanese that were incorporated - Vertin approaches the country and its people with respect and compassion and writes with hope that despite the tragedies of its first decade, South Sudan will find its way someday soon to a peaceful, stable future.
Read this book! Vertin is an intelligent, funny, accurate, and empathic narrator. He has a deep understanding of the place and its history, and has thought hard about his role in being our guide. The result is a compelling and nuanced look at a deeply complex, gritty, beautiful region, its culture, and its tragic recent history. We meet some fascinating characters and Vertin pulls us into their stories, while also delivering many well-earned insights into the challenges, blind spots, and frustrations of American interventionism, and establishing peace in a newborn nation.
