If you are a student of the four cylinder Offy and can only afford one book for your library, White's "Offenhauser" would be a good choice. This is not to minimize the works of Dees, Borgeson, and Walton, but since none of these authors' works (including White's) are in publication any more, the collection can be rather spendy. But White takes you from Les Charlatans, whose concept gave birth to the twin overhead cam four Peugeot that won Indy for the first time in 1913; to Harry Miller, Fred Offenhauser and Leo Goosen who took the fragile Peugeot engine to new levels of excellence; to Offenhauser's purchase of the bankrupt Miller works in 1933 and his focus on one product, the iconic 4 cylinder Offy; to the refinement that Meyer and Drake brought to post-war American racing after their buyout of Fred Offenhauser; to the final days of Dale Drake and Leo Goosen and the turbocharged Offy and DGS engines. White not only produced a definitive history of the Offy, but has owned the fastest Offy midget running over 150 mph at Bonneville.
just when I thought I knew a little bit about the Offy, along comes this book to kick me down a notch! This was a truly amazing effort on the part of the writers/editors, as there is SO MUCH info here, tons and tons of forgotten photos and blueprints and drawings that had to be gathered up. It was amazing to follow the story of the Offy from start to finish, accompanied by all the great pictures. What I liked most is that the story wasn't dry and boring like you'd expect an entire book about an engine to be. It was truly a wonderful history!
When this book was originally published I postponed purchasing it, and soon the supply was exhausted and I lost out. Fortunately, it became available through an Amazon-affiliated bookseller, so I jumped at the chance to buy, and am completely satisfied. My copy is just like new, as the seller had stated, and I received it in just a few days.
