An excellent lecture series. It is taught so well that a scholar and someone new to history can easily understand, enjoy and learn something new. It delves deep into the subject it features providing a great and valuable insight into this subject in history. It's a must have for anyone's historical library. I will say this guy has the most relaxing voice I have ever heard and if I am not careful it relaxes me to the point I get sleepy so I suggest coffee! I suggest the CD format because you can listen to it anywhere from your house, car, phone and etc.

Normally I love The Great Courses; I've listened to at least thirty or forty of these lecture series. This is the only one I couldn't finish. I made it through maybe a quarter of the material (which is still quite a lot, because this is a long course) before I got too tired of how impressed the lecturer is with himself. What irked me most was how often he insisted on referring to "my classical education" and the fantastic insights it provided. He particularly enjoys breaking obscure words into their Greek roots for the listener, which of course he can do thanks to his "classical education." Did I mention he's classically educated? Wouldn't want you to miss that point, because a classical education is the foundation for properly thinking about absolutely anything, and if you don't have one, why, you should pay close attention as old Professor Fagan shares a sliver of his classical education with you, peasant. Oh, and do pretend not to notice that some of the wisdom you'll receive is now known to be false, thanks to recent advances in classical education... no wait, that's recent advances in science. Yeah. Science. Whatever. Gene sequencing can't be that important. After all, the ancient Greeks never wrote anything about it.Snark aside, it's not just that the pomposity is annoying, it's also a waste of time and a distraction. When I'm listening to a course, I want to be learning, not listening to someone try to impress me with their erudition.Bottom line: if you want a wide-ranging lecture series that will help you understand the early history of humanity, skip this one, and get the Great Courses lectures on Big History, taught by David Christian. Even broader scope, far less pompous drivel.
Professor Fagan exhibits unusual degree of bias on almost every subject he discussed here. From Neanderthals, to pre-Columbian Mesoamerican civilizations. He basically poo poos the notion of Neanderthals cross breeding with us, mainly due to his own, unsubstantiated opinions, presented as research. Never mind that by today, those opinions were proven to be wrong. Every subject and civilization is approached in a manner: "Let ME tell you what this all means" rather than presenting us with a fact. He even manages to interject "anthropogenic" global warming into the lectures about prehistory on numerous occasions. I got this on audible, and am tremendously disappointed - I learned maybe one or two new facts, and instead was exposed to a barrage of professor's opinions in a whiny nasal lispy voice which sounds like he is reading poetry rather than presenting historic facts. The only reason I am not giving it one star is the fact that there is a tremendous array of civilizations presented here and for a novice (not me) it might be OK.
The first parts of the course, on the author’s specialty—human and pre-human prehistory—is excellent and detailed. The later parts on civilization are often too general, though parts, as befits an ex-classicist are quite inspiring. There was some padding, though, e.g., generalities about decisions in general around lecture 16. I would also have appreciated more detail on the first civilization, ancient Sumer.
This is a wonderful book. I have enjoyed it and actually am looking forward to reading it again. It contains a wealth of knowledge.
