About the Author
Matt Anniss is a freelance writer and has built his career around his passion for electronic music and club culture. He's been involved in the music industry in some capacity - as a DJ, mix-maker, event promoter, journalist, A&R consultant, occasional producer and even record label owner - since his student days in the late '90s. He confesses to be a vinyl obsessive and owns many more records than any sane person should.Patrick Fuller is a former journalist who for 20 years worked with market-leading media brands such as Stuff and What Hi-Fi? His extensive vinyl collection went missing shortly after he left home in 1987, only to turn up 15 years later in his brother's friend's attic, complete with 1000 rock, pop, classical and dance records the Fuller family had mislaid over the years. Patrick created the Haynes Vinyl Manual with his brilliant co-author Matt Anniss and now plays his records on the beloved Technics SL1210s given to him by his wife Louise. His six children have given up complaining.

I have purchase a few Haynes manuals for cars, They are the best for including every detail of assembling or disassembling your car to do general and even more elaborate repairs. They include good picture and details with tips on things that will cause you problem. This book is nothing like those despite the outward appearance of the cover. The cover has the same Haynes cover as the car manuals, but what like within is completely different. The book was not written by Haynes. Instead it was written by the British Audio Magazine What Hi-Fi? While I generally have good things to say about that periodical, this book is a complete mess. I expected a lot of detail on all things turntables. I expected tips on how to install a cartridge. And it just isn't there. The book is 188 pages and last page on turntables is page 41. That's less than a quarter of the book.The closest thing they have to say about about installing a cartridge is "Google is your friend." I am not joking. Those words are actually in the section titled Setting Up Your Tonearm. The turntable set up guide in the book is about as good as the instruction manual that comes with any starter turntable that has a pre-mounted cartridge. There is no mention of using a protractor to align the cartridge. Even though there are different protractors that can be used to align a cartridge like Baerwald or Stevenson, they aren't mentioned. You would think a book about vinyl ownership would give you some details about how to select the right protractor and when to use another. The book is just awful.Now if you want to know the basics of scratching records like a club DB, there actually are detailed instructions for that. This book is really quirky that way. There are also tips on how to decorate your room to get that feeling of the Royal Albert Hall. I won't go into details because you can buy the book for that, but, apparently you need a chandelier. One section that is actually very good is how records are made is very detailed. Mastering and the actual manufacturing processes is actually well written. That being said, there are mindless details that list the biggest selling records over 15 pages. Let's be honest, this stuff is fine but for this kind of stuff, Google is your friend. You don't really need 15 pages. Two, maybe four pages with a list and the cover art would have been sufficient. Instead each album and single has a short and mostly useless commentary on the record.Just don't even bother. This could and should have been a really informative book from Haynes. Instead it's just a coffee table book with picture to look at.
I was driven to pick up the vinyl owners’ workshop manual by a curiosity about what lies beneath the surface of vinyl and the realities of starting my own collection. It’s a personable introduction to vinyl that carefully lays out the basics to ensure you will get the most out of it, if you plan to embark on the pricey journey to getting higher quality music. More than making a vinyl hobby more approachable, it also gives vinyl its own personality with a vivid history of its origins and a peek into the luxuries of the most enthusiastic vinyl loyalists. It’s an entertaining read that is a great place to start for those who are interested in this resurgent format.
A great introduction to owning Vinyl Records. Covers every aspect with plenty of pictures. The only thing odd was my book had two Chapter 6 printed in the book.Overall, I would recommend it to anyone that collects records. It would probably appeal to the younger crowd as it covers DJing and Crate digging as well as proper care and maintenance of their collection.
Good tips on how to maintain your record collection and turntable. Some good info on how to balance tonearms too.
Disappointed. It is for people who don't know much about turntables and a lot of the book is about DJing. No useful information. It touches on the best selling albums of all time, but does not list the top 100 or anything like that. I found it neither very informative nor very entertaining.

This book is a novelty, not a workshop manual. Cover is the best part.
