About the Author
Yi Ren taught and researched in Beijing after graduating from Tsinghua University. Upon moving to the U.S., she began to teach Chinese. She taught Chinese-American children and has been teaching and tutoring American adults and high school students for the past twenty years. Currently, she is teaching Chinese at Regis Jesuit High School in Denver, Colorado. This is her second book about Chinese language and culture.

Outstanding step by step guide to learning the correct strokes of hundreds of characters!I really liked how each character was broken down and explained - very easy to follow. And the workbook is great. Using this book has made a huge difference in helping me remember the characters. Not to mention my writing looks SO much prettier and is not lopsided anymore! =) Would highly recommend to anyone trying to learn how to write Chinese - great for beginners and even more advanced students as we can always improve our character writing!
Teaches you characters and reading as well as related words. However, it does not teach you the grammar. It gives a workbook section with the words, but you are expected to know the grammar used from another source which is kind of a minor problem. Also, I wish there was audio either on a CD or online, but you will have to look up the pronunciation if you do not understand pinyin and its sounds.
My 8 year-old daughter takes Chinese in school and was motivated to try to learn more at home. Her teacher said it's an excellent book. I like that it helps you learn the characters, words, and meanings. It's not meant for kids, but it seems like an accessible book for all ages.
This is a great intro book for me. I bought a pentel arts calligraphy brush pen to practice with. That pen does bleed through the pages a little, but it's just a practice book so that doesn't bother me.
Very useful book ( I however do not write in my books. I use separate sheets of paper ) Teaches you the stroke order to some basic Chinese characters. I will check out the second book after I master the content of this one.
