Review
The dual storylines keep the pace exciting, and—even though the heroine is sleepy—the art is energetic and charming. Princess Magnolia has fair skin, Duff's is a little bit darker, and the beachgoers are pleasingly diverse. As always, hilarious; perhaps the strongest Princess in Black outing since the first.—Kirkus ReviewsPham’s expressive artwork appears on almost every page, effectively breaking up the text for emerging readers, as well as helping them to visualize the story details. Particularly amusing are the paired illustrations that compare the Goat Avenger and Duff. Recommend the PIB series to Kate DiCamillo’s Mercy Watson graduates looking for a new fix.—Booklist Online

I am delighted to highlight this new book in one of my very favorite series. Shannon Hale and Dean Hale, along with LeUyen Pham have created a truly winning series. In this volume, the Princess in Black has discovered that one of the downsides to having a double identity is very little sleep. Frankly, she's exhausted, and when the Goat Avenger suggests she take a vacation while he watches out for monsters, she's more than happy to agree. Unfortunately, once she's at the beach, things take a turn for the worse when a sea monster shows up to create chaos. Can the Princess in Black save the day again or will she stay in hiding with her friend Princess Sneezewort? Once again, the Hales and Pham have created the perfect book. A delightful text with great read a loud potential (lots of sound effects built right in) and the gorgeous illustrations that highlight poor Princess Marigold's utter exhaustion. I felt tired just looking at her. I especially love the fact that Princess Marigold is a pink-loving sweetheart and a black-wearing monster fighter at the same time. So often society tells kids they need to fit into one neat box or another, with no cross-over between them. But in reality no one fits into a nice, neat little box, and these books demonstrate that to perfection. I'm sorry I'm gushing, but I really do love this series. If you haven't tried it yet I highly recommend that you do.
ALL the books in this series are wonderful! My new reader (1st grade) can handle them on her own and my 2-year old loves having me read them out loud to her- they have a terrific balance of text to pictures so they hold her attention well. They are short enough to read in one sitting, but longer than the typical picture book, a nice in-between stage if you're not ready or in the mood for reading full chapter books. Plus the stories are fun, humorous and full of adventure. It's a series I don't mind re-reading with my kids and it's funny to hear them acting the stories out later. ...Monsters "EAT GOATS!!!"If my review is helpful to you, please let me know by voting below. I appreciate your feedback and I appreciate reading helpful reviews myself when purchasing on Amazon. Pay it forward!
My daughters love this series! I bought the book for my advanced 1st grader and she's able to easily read most of the book independently. My 3rd grader also loves the book, but it's not advanced enough for her. The full color pictures are a very nice addition.
I got this for a struggling third grade reader. She loved it. We read the whole series. Then I brought it home and read it aloud to my five year old daughter who absolutely LOVED them. We read them all (again),Our public library happened to have a Princess in a Black event this summer - my five year old was too excited. We went and she was able to talk all about the books with the "bigger girls".The bright colorful illustrations do assist as context clues. There are also lots of opportunities for predicting/inferring.While this series may not go down in history as great literature of our time - it got two different aged girls (5 & 9) to enjoy reading. That's a success in my eyes! We can't wait for the next book to come out in September!
My daughter adores this book series. She will sit on the couch and digest and the entire book in one sitting if she can. I think they are cute (illustrations and concept) but find them to be just ok. It's fairly predicable and the fact that this is the 4th book and princess magnolia hasn't been honest with her friends about her important work of saving everyone from monsters or asked any of them for help annoys me. That said if there is a 5th book I will buy it for my daughter because the pro's far outweigh the cons of this series.
My daughter loves this series. I like the fact that Princess Magnolia is not your average princess, but a superhero in disguise. The illustrations are engaging and it's fun reading. Shannon Hale keeps putting out quality books for kids, and this one is no exception. Even my son likes this series.I'm wondering though....does she ever get off the island?
PLEASE BUY THESE BOOKS. :) My kiddos are 3 (boy) and 6 (girl) and are LOVING this series. We are now reading them over and over and can't wait for the next one. I don't have a girly-girl, so finding the right style of book is important. She's not interested in princesses or friends that fight or glitter rainbows. But a princess who secretly fights monsters and does ninja is something she can get behind. Seriously, these are so great.
A good read for any 3rd through 5th grade kid. This dynamic author brings Princess in Black to life with the wonderful illustrations of LeUyen Pham, a local artist/author who lives right here in Los Angeles and has done remarkable work.
