Very good textbook on discrete simulation. Not language specific. Am using this as a textbook in a graduate level Simulation and Modeling course at Ohio State. Good text with lots of examples and good explanation.

This is a thorough and sober introduction to discrete-event simulation just as I learned it “on the fly” as an Operations Research Analyst at McDonell-Douglas Missile and Systems Analysis Division (MDMSD), in Huntington Beach, California, circa, 1965 (correctly described here as the “period of advent.”)Most of what is described in this book was either invented independently for the first time, or reinvented independently by the group I was a part of (which incidentally also included Norm Augustine, who went on to become CEO of Martin Marietta and Dr. Robert Arthur Young, who went on to become President of CACI). In particular we wrestled with array-processing and the difficult issue of how to establish a “clock” with a “future event list” on an IBM 7090 with 8 kilobytes of RAM, later upgraded to an IBM 360, with an astounding 32-kilobytes! The entire simulation shell was implemented as a set of FORTRAN subroutines linked together by the “future event list.”It is one thing to be able to pick these tools up off the shelf ready to use, and quite another to have to build the whole shebang from scratch on an 8-kilobyte machine and do so under the duress of a Pentagon contract deadline?Yet, somehow, we managed to get it done. Doing so, has been one of the most creative and thus one of the proudest accomplishments in my professional career. We produced an entire dynamic omnibus military engagement model, that in-house, we called Model H252.It used every tool discussed in this book, and then some. At the time, it was well-known that the FORTRAN simulation toolkit we had invented, was indeed one of the forerunners of Simcript.And although we knew our competitors (Rand, SDS, TRW, North American, Northrop, etc), were doing the same, there was no cross-fertilization in this very competitive business environment. As well, there were few books or references to draw on: It was fly by the seat of your pants all the way.Which gets me to my only concern about this very fine book. Although military applications were mentioned as being among the many possible simulation applications, to my great horror, the emphasis was only on logistics, queuing processes, financial and management type military systems and operations, and not on the actual simulation of dynamic combat military operations?!It did not take me long to figure out why this may have been the case? The Simulations of combat military engagements, which is what our simulation contract for Model H252 at MDMSD called for, invariably were necessarily highly classified. After all, this was at the height of the Cold War, and unlike today when our president and the Russian dictator are apparently more than just “Tweeter Bosom Buddies,” they might also be business partners too? However, in 1965, we were not about to let the Russians know what we were up to in the area of combat computer simulations.Jokes aside, here is my point: There is a whole world of simulation theory missing when dynamic combat operations are omitted. As but one important missing example, the combat capabilities of every weapon systems in our military arsenal, can each be precisely described with the proper set of mathematical equations. And even with array-processing on a computer with very small RAM, and a “Clock” to schedule events, military engagements from one-on-one combat engagements, up to nuclear war exchanges can not only be simulated precisely, but also now are almost a mandatory preliminary step before new systems are off the design boards.How do I know this? Because that is precisely what Program H252 did in 1965. Five stars.

Textbooks are textbooks....I do not particularly like the format of this book, as the pages are small and its softcover makes is very susceptible to damage.

Concept explanations are clear, most provided programs function as explained without much recoding required.

It is a good book for theory and concepts behind simulations. Although it does not cover how to use CSIM which we used in class.

Needed for class, has good examples

Can't profess love for this as it is a required textbook but it serves its purpose and is fine. Came on time and that is important.
